The Tornado Relief Grant provides $10,000 grants to small businesses in Kalamazoo County that were directly impacted by the May 7, 2024 or May 15, 2025 tornados. This program is a partnership between Kalamazoo County and the United Way of South Central Michigan, with funding provided by Kalamazoo County through the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
Eligibility Requirements
- Was negatively impacted by the tornadoes of May 7, 2024 or May 15, 2025.
- Has been in operation for 1 year in Pavilion Charter Township, Texas Charter Township, and the City of Portage, Michigan prior to the tornados.
- Has 10 employees or fewer.
- Has annual revenue of $1.0 million or less.
- Is current on all local, state, and federal taxes.

Application Process
Applications will be submitted completely online. After creating an online account using the link below, applicants will be asked to submit information that includes the following:
- Government Issued Photo ID
- 2024 or most recent Business Tax Return
- Copy of Most Recent Payroll Tax Payment (if applicable)
- Employee Listing/Roster (if applicable)
- Articles of Incorporation, Business License, or DBA
- Corporate Bylaws (if applicable)
- Photos of Damage
- Proof of Insurance Claims
Timeline
- Deadline is October 8 at 12pm with decisions to be announced late October.
- If awarded, recipients will be required to meet in person with UWSCMI staff to finalize the grant agreement. Failure to attend this meeting will result in forfeiture of the award.
