The Tornado Relief Grant provides $10,000 grants to small businesses in Kalamazoo County that were directly impacted by the May 7, 2024, tornado. This program is a partnership between Kalamazoo County and the United Way of South Central Michigan, with funding provided by Kalamazoo County through the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
Eligibility Requirements
- Was negatively impacted by the tornados of May 7, 2024.
- Has been in operation for 1 year in Kalamazoo County prior to the tornado.
- Has 10 employees or fewer.
- Has annual revenue of $1.0 million or less
- Is current on all local, state, and federal taxes.

Application Process
Applications will be submitted completely online. After creating an online account using the link below, applicants will be asked to submit information that includes the following:
- Government Issued Photo ID
- 2024 or most recent Business Tax Return
- Copy of Most Recent Payroll Tax Payment (if applicable)
- Employee Listing/Roster (if applicable)
- Articles of Incorporation, Business License, or DBA
- Corporate Bylaws (if applicable)
Timeline
- May 19-June 20: Application portal goes live and is open for 1 month. All applications will be online.
- June 23-June 27: Staff will review applications and decisions will be made.
- Week of June 30: Decisions are shared out to applicants; grant agreements are sent out.
- July 7-July 18: Grant funds will be disbursed.
