IMPACT! Counting on Financial Literacy

A key piece of becoming financially stable is learning how to manage a household budget. It’s not always simple, especially for those who were never taught how to do it. For those who are trying to learn but also facing challenges as basic as feeding their family, it’s tougher than ever. Lily Missions Center, which provides financial literacy courses for parents as part of the Afterschool program, helped two families get through those challenges.

At the start of the pandemic, two families in the program were struggling to put food on the table. Lily Missions Center decided to run a food bank two times per month for its families and communities. That effort provided both families enough food to feed them all—a total of 12 people. The parents also learned how to distribute the food and received some income to do so. Both families now do not have to worry about where their meals will come from, plus they earn extra cash for everyday supplies. Lily Missions Center knew that people would not attend financial literacy courses if they did not have their basic needs met, and they didn’t want families going into debt to buy food. This approach was a good solution.

When people can meet their basic needs and manage their finances, they take a big step on the pathway to financial stability. United Way is proud to partner with Lily Missions Center to ensure positive impact in our community. Please support this work.
