Starting Over and Finding Stability

WE LIVE UNITED by empowering women to escape abusive relationships and helping them to build a life of financial independence and stability. United Way of Jackson County’s partnership with AWARE, Inc. provides women and children safety and sanctuary while offering the opportunity to start over. Through your support, these families are creating a new life here Jackson County. Here’s one example of the IMPACT in our community.

It was the second time Mia sought support from the shelter. She thought he had changed, but his habits just laid dormant for a while. After the abuse started again, she left with her three children and didn’t look back. While staying at the shelter, she began working with her advocate. Together they set goals and developed a plan. Mia was connected to another United Way supported program through Community Action Agency and they helped her work toward her goals. Additionally, she was connected with Legal Services, also a United Way supported program. They helped her acquire a personal protection order to protect her and her children from her husband. The stability she found at the shelter helped her maintain her employment. Soon she qualified for housing assistance and she was able to find a home and start a new life. Today, Mia and her three children live in a 3 bedroom home, her children go to school in Jackson County, and Mia was able to continue working.

Your support helped Mia regain her stability and provided her with an opportunity to start over. Her story is just one of the hundreds of success stories that are a direct result of this United Way partnership.

Thank you for your support.
