The Pathway To Success Starts Early

Students who are succeeding in elementary school have a greater chance of graduating high school.

By IMPACTING at-risk youth and setting them on their pathway to success at a young age, we can ensure they will be ready for college or a fulfilling career. Falling victim to poverty is the alternative for these kids. We are fighting for their stability and success. United Way of Jackson County supports the Lily Missions Center’s After School Program where kids have a safe environment to learn and grow. Robbie’s story is just one example of a child working hard to succeed. He didn’t have the support he needed outside of the classroom and he was destined for a life of hardship. Your support helped us fight for his future.

Robbie was in 3rd grade when he first came to the Lily Missions Center’s After School Program 2 years ago. His great-great-grandmother brought him in hoping he would receive help with his academics. Robbie had already fallen victim to Jackson’s multi-generational poverty. He was removed from his mom’s home as a result of many issues. He was an angry child too. For several weeks he would throw chairs, tip over garbage cans, and hit other students. He was reading at a kindergarten level and failing every subject in school. The staff at the center knew they had to address the underlying issues before they could help with his school work. The Director is a licensed Mental Health Counselor and she worked with Robbie every day. He learned coping skills and how to express his feelings. After building a rapport with him, his academics began to excel.

Robbie continues to attend the After School Program and today he is a confident young man with character and charm. A few weeks ago he ran through the door and made a very loud, and very excited announcement.

“I scored 50 points higher than I needed too on my testing!”

Robbie’s next goal is to be on Parkside’s basketball team.

The Lily Missions Center’s Programs impact over 500 kids annually. 91% of their 4th graders showed improved reading and 81% showed improved math scores. Your support provides a safe environment with structured activities from caring mentors where at-risk youth are succeeding in school and changing their future.
