A Statement from United Way of South Central Michigan

On January 27, the President issued an Executive Order halting payments from federal grants and loans to nonprofit and government programs nationwide. Described as temporary to allow the Administration time to make sure those programs align with its priorities, the funding pause has been blocked until Monday by a federal judge.

While the effects of a pause aren’t yet clear, stopped payments could quickly and severely impact local programs supporting basic needs, housing, health care and education. The risk to people’s lives and livelihoods could be enormous. We’re also very concerned for our nonprofit partners, who could face issues with cash flow and the ability to deliver services. This pause would affect some United Way programs as well, notably our work to address homelessness and hunger.

We are working with our national nonprofit partners to urge the Administration to reconsider the funding pause and restore these dollars that provide essential assistance to thousands of people across our communities and millions nationwide. We will continue to monitor the situation, documenting the impact on local programs and participants, and advocating for our partners and programs during this time of uncertainty.
