From Despair to Stability: Catholic Charities

Connection Corner (4)

JACKSON – Becoming financially stable is key to a successful life. But that’s not the only stability that matters. Finding emotional stability through mental health is just as crucial. That’s why United Way of South Central Michigan is pleased to work with Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties on a voucher program that makes sure those who struggle with life’s toughest issues get the help they need.

Catholic Charities recently had a client come to them who was unemployed, living in an unsafe environment and had no family to turn to. She felt abandoned and defeated. The United Way Voucher Program opened the door to weekly therapy at a local clinic.  She also connected with Community Action Agency for help with housing.

The results were inspiring. The client thrived with the help from these supportive services. She was able to get out of her unsafe living situation and landed at AWARE Inc.’s shelter. She also found a job and secured a new home. Her employment meant she had health insurance, which meant she had access to a psychiatrist and medication to stabilize her mood. Today she’s optimistic and working on finding a college to attend.

What makes this story especially powerful is partnership—all of these organizations collaborate with United Way. That collaboration has transformed a life.
