IMPACT! Fighting Unlawful Evictions

Eviction can lead to homelessness. Yet many people don’t know the legal steps that must happen before they can be evicted—and the safeguards that can be brought to bear to keep someone in their home. Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM), a United Way partner, fights for those who face an unlawful eviction:

LSSCM assisted a Jackson resident who faced eviction after her single parent died and the person from whom the parent bought the home on land contract threatened to evict the survivor without following the legal process. The seller offered the resident a new land contract with bad terms. An LSSCM attorney stepped in, advised the resident of her rights and the bad terms of the contract, and represented her when the seller filed eviction proceedings. Ultimately the case was dismissed. LSSCM and the resident negotiated a settlement with the seller, allowing the resident ample time to find a new home without bearing excessive costs.

Legal expertise is vital to make sure every person realizes their rights. Your support for United Way makes that expertise available to those in need. Thank you!
