Join Us for Free Screening of 'Resilience'

Raising Kalamazoo County, United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, and the Michigan ACE Initiative invite you to view the award-winning documentary “Resilience”.

“Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope” chronicles the birth of a new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators and communities, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction and disease. This documentary clearly and succinctly describes Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs are associated with alcoholism, drug use, suicide, domestic violence, and more.

Jennifer Nottingham, Associate Director of Community Impact, shares that “ACEs are connected to almost every social, physical and emotional health issue. For example, compared to someone with no ACEs, a person with four ACEs is twice as likely to smoke, seven times more likely to be an alcoholic, three times more likely to have cancer, and twelve times more likely to attempt suicide.

“As a community, if we are going to solve the complicated challenges that we face, we need to address this issue,” she said. “The screenings and the conversation that follows is a call to action so that we can work together to ensure that every single person has an opportunity to reach their full potential.”

Join United Way on December 11th from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at KRESA’s auditorium for the screening of “Resilience”, and learn about cutting-edge examples of ways the research is being used to both prevent ACES and mitigate their impact. A dynamic conversation about the movie and how we can support a trauma-informed community for Kalamazoo’s children and families will follow.
