Those In Need Are Finding Stability Through 211

UNITED WE FIGHT for the financial stability of every person in our community. Through Central Michigan 2-1-1, people in need are connected with health and human resources in Jackson County. Specialists provide information, referrals, navigation and advocacy when people are looking for help or to give help in our community. Penni is just one of the nearly 11,000 individuals who called Central Michigan 2-1-1 last year. Her story is one example of the many lives impacted through this UWJC-supported program.

Penni and her husband were experiencing hard times. Due to major medical issues, her husband lost his job shortly after the family had a new baby. They fell behind on their mortgage payment and their property taxes. While doing some research online, Penni learned of 2-1-1 and decided to call to see what help might be available for her struggling family. The Information and Referral Specialist answered Penni’s call, and Penni began explaining all that had recently happened to her family. The Specialist listened carefully, asking some clarifying questions and searched for the best options for Penni. Recognizing Penni needed urgent help with housing, the Specialist provided resources to help Penni with her mortgage payment and property taxes, housing counseling and encouraged her to contact the Township to learn if she could apply for an exemption on future property tax. The Specialist also learned that Penni and her husband had begun the process to apply for Disability assistance but were struggling with portions of the application. The Specialist located a nearby advocate that could help them complete the application. The Specialist also asked screening questions regarding Penni’s new baby and learned they didn’t have a primary care physician. The Specialist connected them directly to a program offering support for children’s health care. Penni said she felt a huge sense of relief and was very grateful the I&R Specialist provided information about her pressing need as well as other services that could help her family!

2-1-1 is accessible 24/7 throughout the entire year. Simply call 2-1-1 anytime or text your zip code to 898-211. Through the Central Michigan 2-1-1 website you can chat, email, or search their database.
