IMPACT! Having People’s Backs

Legal issues are the toughest for people who struggle financially to get resolved. Fortunately, we’re able to partner with Legal Services of South Central Michigan to make sure the most vulnerable people of Jackson County get the support they need. Following is a story of how LSSCM stepped up for a local resident:

Legal Services of South Central Michigan represented a disabled Jackson resident with limited income who faced eviction from federally subsidized housing during the COVID‐19 pandemic. The apartment had a water leak into the ceiling, signs of water damage and mold growth, electrical issues that posed safety concerns, and an insect infestation. The landlord did not make any repairs, so the client began withholding her monthly rent payment, and the landlord filed for eviction. An LSSCM attorney advised the client and represented her in court. The client filed a complaint with the City of Jackson, and ultimately the City cited the landlord and required several repairs. The parties reached a settlement in which the landlord repaired the apartment issues, and the client paid an agreed‐upon amount for the rent was withheld. The court case was dismissed, and the threat of eviction was resolved.
