United Way firmly believes that an equitable community, diverse and inclusive of all people, is vital to a vibrant, enduring society. We strive each day to lead with our values, of which equity is the heart and soul, driving our commitment to accountability, transparency, partnership and impact.
Robust economic development is a key to individuals and families becoming financially stable. For those in poverty or who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE), well-paying jobs provide the pathway. But as national, statewide and local data on economic disparities show, economic development strategies must also be rooted in equity so that all people experience equitable job attainment, retention and pay.
We commend our many community partners who rose and challenged Southwest Michigan First’s recent CEO selection process and outcome. The message is crystal clear: Kalamazoo stands for an equitable and just community for every person. As Southwest Michigan First begins a new CEO search, we look forward to a more transparent and inclusive process that is informed by and accountable to diverse stakeholders from across the region. Further, we encourage Southwest Michigan First’s board, staff and partners to fully embrace a commitment to diversity and partnership. We join with the entire community in offering our perspective as partners to strengthen the process and assure the best possible outcome for all.
